Primary 5

Welcome to Primary 5!

Primary 5 is the beginning of a whole new key stage for children! We start to become more independent learners and learn how to do research for our many P5 topics. P5 is a year packed with fun activities and challenges.

We start P5 with our Egyptian topic. We will get the chance to do lots of research on Ancient Egypt, some of it turning out to be quite gruesome!

After Halloween, we begin our ‘Where we are from?’ topic, which will cover many different aspects of Lisburn in past years.
The summer term is set aside for the Titanic topic, ending in a trip to the Titanic Museum in Belfast!

Literacy – We enjoy reading a range of novels in P5. One of our shared class novels is George’s Marvellous Medicine. The pupils enjoyed making their own marvellous medicines… most of them are very disgusting!

We read a range of other novels in our reading groups and also do independent reading on a daily basis as part of the Accelerated Reader program. We have different competitions throughout the year associated with AR and it can become quite competitive between each class!

Numeracy - This year we are working hard using the timetables and number bonds we know to solve more challenging word problems. We also learn lots more about 2D and 3D shapes, including spotting these all around us. We explore perimeter and area, and we love learning about measures as this always involves lots of practical learning with scales, trundle wheels, metre sticks etc. We use Freckle both in school and at home to assist us with our numeracy. There are competitions run throughout the year by Mr McCann (maths coordinator) on Freckle, and these to become very competitive!

Religion - We follow the Grow in Love programme in P5 and spend time learning more about the Nativity in order to help us with our Christmas Carol service. We enjoy writing our own prayers and using this during our Religion lessons. We are fortunate that Fr Eamon visits us often to remind us of the importance of the connections between the Parish and school.

P.E. – In P5 we start swimming at the Leisureplex! This will happen in the last term, but up until that, we do dance, gymnastics, circuits and have a great time each PE lesson.

We hope everyone has a great year with us in P5!
